Don't let your old phone lie around gathering dust when you can get up to £80 by sending it to Fonebak to be
re-used or recycled.

Aside from getting some extra cash for your piggy bank or your favourite charity, you can rest easier knowing you haven't contributed to the estimated 1,500 tonnes of annual landfill from discarded mobiles - and someone in a developing country may be able to make use of your phone.

Keen to take part? It's easy. Once you've worked out how much your phone's worth, find out how to recycle it in just three steps.

So you've kissed your old mobile goodbye and popped it in the post. A few days later it will arrive at Fonebak's recycling centre where someone will test it and decide whether it should be recycled or re-used.

What happens when your phone is recycled

What happens when your phone is
re-used

Your mobile
Your phone is incinerated and the energy generated is used to heat homes. Metals including gold, platinum, silver, palladium and copper are extracted and used again.

Your charger and accessories
Metal from your charger is extracted and any plastic is used to make traffic cones and buckets. Plastic from accessories is recycled into sheeting used in furniture making.

The batteries
Materials like nickel, cadmium and lithium are extracted and used to make power tools, saucepans and pharmaceuticals.

Fixing and a facelift
Your phone is thoroughly tested, repaired and revamped so it looks like new.

Shipped off to a new country
It's then packaged up and sent to Eastern Europe, Asia or Africa where new phones are expensive and landlines are few and far between.

A new owner and a new life
Someone who really needs a mobile, but can't afford a new one, will be able to buy your old phone without breaking the bank.
